Virginity is not an Ebay auction item

I came across this little dandy.  Call it a sign of the times.  In the link below, you get to hear first hand from a young woman that it is selling her virginity online for the first time under the auspices that it’s a social statement.  The winning bid thus far is about $4mm.  She’s very proud of herself for not “giving away” her most treasured possession, and instead finding a way to profit and wrestle control away from age-old norms that men control women’s sexuality.

The most saddening statement in this article is right here…

At the university level, I was given permission to think differently and form a moral code of my own design.

To many, this doesn’t sound so bad, but there is a term for it called Moral Relativism.  My truth may not be true for you and vice versa.  Are we to the point as a society that we can’t agree on some things being just flat out wrong?  Is this not wrong?  It would be interesting to do a time travel experiment and see the reaction you would have 20 years ago and 20 years from now.  My assumption is that 20 years ago, she would have been nearly vilified and ostracized by everyone she knows.  Now, most are disgusted but kind of roll their eyes and move along.  I would imagine that 20 years from now, this will be a common practice.

When societies no longer agree on right and wrongs and we are all individually allowed to form our own moral code, then get ready buddy, cause rape and murder are on the dinner menu.

We have a great need to be independent and feel like we call the shots in our own lives. Our rights have been taken away (in this case by men) and we want them back. We are designed for relationships but are willing to even sell those things that are meant for intimate relationships so we can feel like we have independence and power. I think it will be an empty victory.

Great comment. When I read this article, I hear her trying to convince herself she’s right, but not quite sure.
